Planet Kremlin

Russia invades Georgia. Georgia cries out for Bully Protective Services courtesy of Western World. It is probably the biggest and most significant political action this year, generating more questioning and debate than Nick Carter's sexual orientation. The man at the middle of it all, Russian President Vladimir Putin, seems oddly at peace about the whole situation. One might even care to observe, as if he had planned it all.
This week the Ruski's were on the back of Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith, making sure they were going to come good on their $1b-a-year Uranium deal. Smith decided to take into account his own personal views on the matter when addressing the Russians on "Australia's" reservations towards their actions in Georgia. A poorly calculated move on his part. The last thing a man is to do is to make known the idea that he may not continue in an already signed deal with Russians, regardless of the nature of the matter. Smith has put Australian relations with Russia at unnecessary risk with his personal opinions.
Putin seems to have come out of his shell. Letting the ex-Soviet States know who their real daddy is, telling the WTO they can suck a fat one, and showing the emptiness of that obscure thing known as NATO. No wonder Stephen Smith jumped in his seat. Putin is a tough son-of-a-bitch. And I mean that quite literally, he was born of a Pit bull/Terrier. He reveled in showing the world just how dependent the EU is on Russian energy reserves and one suspects he is most pleased with embarrassment of the US at it's impotence.
Whilst many, including myself, joke about Vladimir's look, the abrasive nature with which he deploys the Russian military is not humorous at all. In the first 5 days of war with Georgia, over 1000 people were killed. Not to mention the tens of thousands that are displaced and homeless, without food or shelter. Aid organisations are constantly frustrated with military check-points and and the ever-winding red tape. If there ever was to be a resurfacing of the Cold War, it is indeed now. The flex of Moscow muscle on previously Soviet controlled States is at its apex. The gravitational pull of the Kremlin is tearing up would-be NATO States such as the Ukraine.
Yet one must still question the thinking behind this. The truly evil man never believes that his actions are indeed anything less than right. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov declared that sanctions by the EU against Russia would be a display of confusion and could only come from a very sick mind. Whilst the Georgian's did get a big head and start the whole ruckus, the Russian reaction is by no means favorable or a demonstration of neutrality. And still, Planet Kremlin grows ever stronger.
